It’s no surprise that depression afflicts many caregivers. After all, caregiving can isolate you from society . Create feelings of guilt. Bring on health problems. If you are feeling caregiver depression, please know you’re not alone. We’re here for you, and we have some suggestions that may help you cope. Keeping a calm and loving demeanor when you’re with your loved one is essential to creating a positive care environment and while it can be difficult, there are useful techniques that can help:
- Take a Break—A small break from your routine can let you refresh yourself so you can go back to caregiving. Make sure you do something you enjoy with the time.
- Go Online—to find caregiving resources in our area visit www.caregivingfamilies.com To connect with other caregivers visit our Facebook page—”Davidson County Family Caregivers”
- Get Respite—Getting a professional or family member to help give you a break will not only give you some rest from caregiving but can also give your loved one a chance to interact with another person, providing them new stimuli. Locally, there is a Group Respite program that provides care from 10:00 until 3:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at The Life Center of Davidson County. This program is free or low cost for Caregivers and participants. Call 249-2155 for more information.
- Suggest a Swap –Check with your loved one’s neighbors or church members or a family member to see if they are willing to swap care on a regular basis. Or see if a retired volunteer would be willing to come and sit with your loved one. Scheduling this “time apart” is important for you and your loved one.
- Find a Group –Finding a group of individuals who are in the same situation can help you not only learn more about caregiving but can also give you some needed social interaction. There are several free caregiving support groups that meet here in Davidson County. Details about these groups are included below.
Remember that caring for yourself is part of being a caregiver. You need to make sure caring for yourself is not an afterthought, but is a regular part of your routine.
"Lend yourself to others, but give yourself to yourself." Michel de Montaigne
